What Size Tent Do I Need? A Guest-Count Guide

How to size a tent for your guest count, seating style and everything else that needs to fit under it.

The most common question we get is “what size tent do I need?” The answer comes down to three things: how many people, how they will be seated, and what else has to fit under the tent.

Start with the square-footage rule of thumb

Event planners use a simple estimate of how much space each guest needs:

Event styleSpace per guest
Seated dinner at round tablesAbout 10–12 sq ft
Seated at long banquet tablesAbout 8–10 sq ft
Standing or cocktail-style crowdAbout 6–8 sq ft

Multiply your guest count by the number for your style. For example, 100 guests at round tables need roughly 1,000 to 1,200 square feet just for seating.

Then add space for the extras

Seating is only part of the picture. Make a list of everything else that will be under the tent:

  • Buffet or food line: plan room for the tables and a line of guests.
  • Dance floor: a dance floor takes real space, especially for weddings.
  • DJ, band or stage: musicians and speakers need a clear area and power nearby.
  • Head table, cake table, gift table and bar: each one adds to the footprint.
  • Walkways: guests and servers need room to move between tables.

Open houses are different

Graduation open houses and come-and-go parties rarely have every guest there at once. Instead of sizing for the full invite list, size for your busiest hour. That often means a smaller tent than you would expect.

Think about the weather and the ground

If rain is possible, you may want everyone, including the food, under cover at the same time. Sidewalls help on windy or chilly days. The ground matters too: our pole tents are staked, so we need open ground where stakes can go in. A level, open spot with a clear path for our truck makes setup easy.

Skip the math: our Tent Size Planner estimates a tent size from your guest count and layout, and we double-check every layout before your date.

When in doubt, go a little bigger

A tent that is slightly too large feels open and comfortable. A tent that is too small feels cramped the moment it rains and everyone crowds inside. If you are between two sizes, call or text us and we will talk it through with you.
